Get the inspiring diary of my journey through life !
Learn from the challenges I have to overcome.

MOVING HORIZONS is the account of a very personal journey - my journey, the one on the road named Personal Growth. We are all on this road, although it never looks crowded. Maybe that's because most people don't know they're on it, being busy speeding down the highway to places far away.

The articles I write on the way will give you guidance for your own progress, offer food for thought and inspire you to see the world in a different light sometimes. I'll direct your thinking inwards more often - that's where I think the new frontiers for this century are to be found.

Yes, I have also seen the corners of the globe from the highway, and for a long time I didn't realize that I had embarked on another voyage to destinations I never even knew existed, closer to home - a road full of potholes and spiked with a myriad of new challenges I had never planned to travel.

Having left Germany in 1984, it was in South Africa where I gradually discovered that life is not a destination, that horizons travel along with us wherever we go and that the mastery of life seems to be an act of faith rather than the skilful application of our modern technology we are so proud of.

We've seen a lot of Africa now, the beautiful and the ugly side of it. Some of that you will find reflected in the articles you are about to read, since many of Africa's facets only surface when you have lived here long enough.

The articles I write are not about Africa, though - they are from Africa about human joy and dilemma from another viewpoint than the limited European one I grew up with, and therefore a mixture of both.

They hopefully add an exotic flavour to what I come across in my world - and maybe open some eyes here and there. We have so much to learn still, and so little inclination to actually do it.

Lightning over Simon's Town

MOVING HORIZONS is a summary of these articles, beautifully illustrated with photographs like this, taken in Africa by Stephen Cruickshank, a professional photographer who lives close by near the Cape of Good Hope.

By writing articles about topics I find challenging in my own life, I hope to provide guidance and inspiration, offer food for thought and give direction for anyone trying to get a handle on the meaning of life.

I wrote GRIEF right after my father died in 2004, and JUMP FOR JOY when we saw a spectacular display of dolphins in False Bay from Fish Hoek beach. Others deal with CHOICES, DESIRE and ADVERSITY.

The articles are highlighted with my favourite quotations from great personalities, wise authors and famous philosophers of recorded history, like Mikhail Dostoyevsky's on the right here.

MOVING HORIZONS is meant to be a constant companion for reflection to anyone who has ever wondered what we are doing on this planet, and an acknowledgement to the beauty of Africa - the forgotten continent which has so much to offer.

Two enthusiastic readers of MOVING HORIZONS had this to say about the book : "

"The secret of man's being
is not only to live,
but to have something
to live for."

Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky
1821 - 1881

Thank you for Moving Horizons, Berend - I really enjoyed it and could identify with your experiences very easily.

Made me think again about myself and my past, joys and otherwise, which was good - it helped lay a few ghosts to rest too!

Thanks once again and enjoy your beautiful Simonstown.

Thank you for the copy of "Moving Horizons". How wonderful to be able to take the time to capture thoughts (with great complimentary photography) !

For many of us, I am afraid we go so fast at work that beyond a visit to the gym from time to time, we miss out on the opportunity of indulging in reflectance of events. Many lessons escape us as we have not had the time or been sufficiently disciplined to review them, learn and grow.

So thank you not only for graciously sharing your work, but also for planting a seed to spark a need to reflect on life and the glory of being alive.

With sincere good wishes, Robin A.
